Sustain: the alliance for better food and farmingOctober 14, 2020, 3:54 pm
Sustain believes the planning system should be responsive to communities that want to shape the place they live to bring about sustainable local food systems. Places where policy makers, growers, food retailers, food businesses and consumers work in partnership will be healthy communities. Communities should have a voice not only at the policy stage but also in responding to details of a specific proposal to ensure all impacts have been taken into account and all possible opportunities have been identified. Food partnerships can bring a wealth of expertise to decision making. For more information on our position regarding the proposed planning reforms, please see: https://www.sustainweb.org/news/oct20-planning-for-the-future/

A planning system in which all communities can meaningfully participate is an essential aspect of a democratic society.

We support a "presumption against development". That does not mean no development should happen but rather that the onus should be on the proposer to demonstrate that the development is needed and also has no more than a neutral environmental impact.

It is people in communities who know the area best and if developers worked with them we would get better development.

Holmer Green and Hazlemere Neighbourhood Development Forum is a Facebook group which is giving a voice to people in these villages. We aim to let people know about prospective development plans, rather than relying on a poster on a random lamppost. Agreements have been signed between Planning Officers and Developers without the Community being told. We live in these villages, we want to be informed and we want a voice

This Charter not only accurately represents my strong views on this subject but also accurately highlights the anger and frustration resulting from the helplessness of being powerless to influence what happens in my own community.

Since the 70’s 41% of UK wildlife species have declined and as many as 26% are in real danger of becoming extinct. We need to act urgently to reverse this trend. The Government White Paper on Planning will do the exact opposite and what little habitats remain will be at the mercy of developers and as citizens we will all suffer hugely. We must fight to keep the right to challenge and oppose any plans which affect us, our families and future generations.

This so wrong taking away individual rights of people and communities to speak out.
