Sustain believes the planning system should be responsive to communities that want to shape the place they live to bring about sustainable local food systems. Places where policy makers, growers, food retailers, food businesses and consumers work in partnership will be healthy communities. Communities should have a voice not only at the policy stage but also in responding to details of a specific proposal to ensure all impacts have been taken into account and all possible opportunities have been identified. Food partnerships can bring a wealth of expertise to decision making. We support a "presumption against development". That does not mean no development should happen but rather that the onus should be on the proposer to demonstrate that the development is needed and also has no more than a neutral environmental impact.

I’m a former city councillor, and know from experience how residents feel when they don’t have any control over what is build in their local community. The government’s reforms go in the wrong direction on this front. This charter is an important way of demonstrating that there are many people and organisations who are concerned.

We already live in the one of the most centralised systems in the modern world. To take away local involvement in planning decisions make this even worse. These decisions should be left with local communities and power should not be handed to developers and Westminster. We have already seen how rotten the links between Government and developers are and this can only make cronyism and corruption more likely
